Ever since its beginnings, the association has promoted research by its members into sugar chemistry and technology. Lectures and presentations are organised by the regional branches, and VDZ members come together once a year at the annual general meeting in May. This comprises a conference part, where scientific papers are presented, and social events. The VDZ currently has about 600 members.
